The next morning, Bertie was gone . . . she vaguely remembered him slipping out of bed while it was still dark and murmuring about work, pressing a kiss on her temple.

She had slept naked. Again, a first. With Henry, she’d always gotten dressed afterward, because she didn’t like the feeling of her naked legs pressed together, her breasts sliding around any which way. Yes, she was one of those women who wore a bra to bed, as Mother had. It kept her bosom from premature sagging.

Contrary to what she’d thought, Albert’s personal hygiene was satisfactory. Yes, he smelled salty and tangy, and there was the faint smell of wood about him, but to her shock, she found it appealing. His hands were strong, and while they were both in their sixties, somehow he had made her feel . . . amazing. It was strange, those little squeaks that came out of her, the sighing, the . . . the unfamiliar pleasure of it all, not just the, er, culmination, but the way he’d unbuttoned her blouse, slowly and with great appreciation for what was underneath. His hairy arm around her afterward. The appealing creases in his face as he smiled at her. She almost didn’t mind his missing tooth.

She took a shower, got dressed and went into the kitchen, noting the muddy footprints from her ruined tennis shoe. She didn’t even mind.

Albert had left a note! Thanks for a lovely evening, Cindy. Hope to see you again soon. Here’s my number if you want to call.

Cindy. Cindy sounded rather cute, didn’t it? Cindy. Someone young and energetic. Definitely someone with a beautiful garden, someone who liked taking long walks rather than driving. Someone who might be interested in having a beau.

But Bertie Baines? She thought a moment, stirring her coffee. Bertie Baines. Everyone seemed to think well of him (except Cynthia herself, until last night). Now that she mulled it over, he had been interested in her for some time, hadn’t he? Dropping into the bookstore, asking her for recommendations, trying to make conversation. He’d been checking her out!

What a flattering thought.

She glanced at the clock. Plenty of time before going to work. And so, she went to Facebook and composed her message, even before she cleaned the floor.
